Figure 9.2. Government House, Halifax, 1819, by John Elliott Woolford. As this watercolour by John Elliott Woolford suggests, Government House, opened in 1811, impressed visitors with its symmetrical windows and hipped rooflines, typical of Georgian architecture that was common in early nineteenth-century Halifax.

Its uneven opportunities notwithstanding, Nova Scotia had been transformed in the years between 1793 and 1820. The consumer revolution, which had been gaining ground since the mid-eighteenth century in the Atlantic world, sunk deep roots in the colony during the war, fuelling notions of the good life that extended beyond basic subsistence and spiritual salvation. While rural communities still seemed rough-hewn by European standards, the countryside now boasted estates worthy of an English gentleman. Joseph Brown Comingo, the grandson of Lunenburg’s first German Reformed minister, managed to make a modest living between 1808 and 1820 by painting watercolour portraits, family groups, and landscapes for an expanding middle class.79 Governor Wentworth added to the stock of Georgian structures in Halifax with a new gubernatorial residence whose cornerstone was laid in September 1800. Perceived by the assembly as built “on a scale far beyond the wants and circumstances of the Province,” it was constructed with local stone, much of it procured at Wallace, in Pictou County (figure 9.2).80 Stone was also used in the construction of a new building to house the legislature, a project launched in 1811 and completed in 1819. Both Government House and Province House were built to last, and are still in use for their original purposes.
